dbi

DBI - The Perl 5 Database Interface

Is there an equivalent of PHP's mysql_real_escape_string() for Perl's DBI?

Could some tell me if there is a function which works the same as PHP's mysql_real_escape_string() for Perl from the DBI module?

Reusing ?'s on a DBI prepare

Is there a way to reuse the ?'s used on a DBI prepare statement. Consider the following code:

$sth=$dbh->prepare("INSERT INTO mytable(a,b,c) SELECT ?,B(?),C(?)");
$sth->execute($a,$a,$a);

It would be very nice to instead use something like this:

#I'm making this up as something I hope exists
$sth=$dbh->prepare("INSERT INTO mytable(a,b,c) SELECT ?,B(?:1),C(?:1)");
$sth->execute($a);

Notice that only one $a is passed to the execute instead of three. Is there a way to do this in real life?

Which Perl database interface should I use?

Is CPAN DBI the best database interface to use in Perl for general database use? Are there some better options?

How can I fetch a single count value from a database with DBI?

The following code seems to be just too much, for getting a single count value. Is there a better, recommended way to fetch a single COUNT value using plain DBI?

sub get_count {
   my $sth = $dbh->prepare("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM table WHERE...");
   $sth->execute( @params );
   my $($count) = $sth->fetchrow_array;
   $sth->finish;

   return $count;
}

This is shorter, but I still have two statements.

sub get_count_2 {
   my $ar = $dbh->selectall_arrayref("SELECT ...", undef, @params)
   return $ar->[0][0];
}

How can I pass MySQL functions as bind parameters in prepared statement?

I'm trying to do this:

$sth = $dbi->prepare('INSERT INTO table VALUES (?, ?, ?)');
$sth->execute(
    $var1,
    $var2 || 'NOW()',
    $var3
);

without any luck. Any ideas?

How can I show the query time in perl, DBI?

I use perl and DBI to manage my mysql tables, querys, etc. How can I show the running time of a query?

If I do a SELECT in the console, the result will be like this:

+-----+-------------+
| id  | name        |
+-----+--------------
|   1 | Jack        |
|   2 | Joe         |
|   3 | Mary        |
+-----+-------------+
3 rows in set (0.17 sec)

I need to show 0.17 sec. There is any way under DBI to show the running time in perl? Something like this:

my $dbh = $db->prepare("SELECT id, name FROM names ORDER BY id;");
$dbh->execute;
print $dbh->runnin_time; # ???

How can I fetch the last row I inserted using DBI?

How can I fetch the last row that was inserted using DBI (DBD::mysql)?

Code sample:

my $sth = $dbh->prepare('INSERT INTO a ( x, y, z ) VALUES ( ?, ?, ? )');
$sth->execute( $x, $y, $z );

How can I get access to the data that was inserted by the above prepare statement? I need to get the primary ID (AUTOINCREMENT) value.

UPDATE:

From DBD::mysql documentation:

An alternative way for accessing this attribute is via $dbh->{'mysql_insertid'}.

Thank you Manni and n0rd for your answers. :-)

How do I know how many rows a Perl DBI query returns?

I'm trying to basically do a search through the database with Perl to tell if there is an item with a certain ID,. This search can return no rows, but it can also return one.

I have the following code:

my $th = $dbh->prepare(qq{SELECT bi_exim_id FROM bounce_info WHERE bi_exim_id = '$exid'});
$th->execute();
if ($th->fetch()->[0] != $exid) {
        ...

Basically, this tries to see if the ID was returned and if it's not, continue with the script. But it is throwing a Null array reference error on the $th->fetch()->[0] thing. How can i just simply check to see if it returned rows or now?

How can I print the SQL query executed after Perl's DBI fills in the placeholders?

I'm using Perl's DBI module. I prepare a statement using placeholders, then execute the query.

Is it possible to print out the final query that was executed without manually escaping the parameters and dropping them into the placeholders?

Thanks

How can I get a row count in DBI without running two separate calls to process?

I'm running DBI in Perl and can't figure out how, when I run a prepared statement, I can figure out if the returned row count is 0.

I realize I can set a counter inside my while loop where I fetch my rows, but I was hoping there was a less ugly way to do it.

When to use $sth->fetchrow_hashref, $sth->fetchrow_arrayref and $sth->fetchrow_array?

I know that:

  • $sth->fetchrow_hashref returns a hashref of the fetched row from database,
  • $sth->fetchrow_arrayref returns an arrayref of the fetched row from database, and
  • $sth->fetchrow_array returns an array of the fetched row from database.

But I want to know best practices about these. When should we use fetchrow_hashref and when should we use fetchrow_arrayref and when should we use fetchrow_array?

How to Install DBD::Oracle in Strawberry Perl

I am trying to install DBD::Oracle using the CPAN shell in Strawberry Perl. I initially experienced an error because the Makefile could not locate an OCI library, so I installed the instant client from Oracle. I thought this would fix the problem, but now I get a large mixture of errors and warnings from Oracle.h, dbdimp.h, Oracle.c, Oracle.xsi, and Oracle.xs.

Any suggestions for how I should proceed? Is it possible that there is a problem with existing Oracle software on my computer? I am fairly new to Perl, so any help is appreciated.

Edit -- I'm including the entire output below:

Why can't DBD::SQLite insert into a database through my Perl CGI script?

I am running a SQLite database within a Perl CGI script which is being accessed by DBD::SQLite. This is being run as a straight CGI on Apache.

The DBI connection works fine and selects are able to be run. However, when I attempt to do an insert I get a die with the following error:

DBD::SQLite::st execute failed: unable to open database file(1) at dbdimp.c line 402 at index.cgi line 66

I have tried changing the database file permission to 666 to try to fix this however I am still receiving the error.

Any advice?

Why does DBI's do method return "0E0" if zero rows were affected?

I ran into a problem when running code similar to the following example:

my $rows = $dbh->do('UPDATE table SET deleted=NOW() WHERE id=?', undef, $id)
  or die $dbh->errstr;
if (!$rows) {
  # do something else
}

Since the docs state that do returns the number of rows affected, I thought that would work.

Prepare and execute a single statement. Returns the number of rows affected or undef on error. A return value of -1 means the number of rows is not known, not applicable, or not available.

As it turns out, I was mistaken. When I debugged it, I saw that $rows in fact holds the string 0E0, which of course is a true-ish value. I dug in the docs further and saw this piece of code:

The default do method is logically similar to:

  sub do {
      my($dbh, $statement, $attr, @bind_values) = @_;
      my $sth = $dbh->prepare($statement, $attr) or return undef;
      $sth->execute(@bind_values) or return undef;
      my $rows = $sth->rows;
      ($rows == 0) ? "0E0" : $rows; # always return true if no error
  }

There it is. It returns 0E0. I just don't get why it would do that. Does anyone know?

Perl DBI insert multiple rows using mysql native multiple insert ability

Has anyone seen a DBI-type module for Perl which capitalizes, easily, on MySQL's multi-insert syntax

insert into TBL (col1, col2, col3) values (1,2,3),(4,5,6),...?

I've not yet found an interface which allows me to do that. The only thing I HAVE found is looping through my array. This method seems a lot less optimal vs throwing everything into a single line and letting MySQL handle it. I've not found any documentation out there IE google which sheds light on this short of rolling my own code to do it.

TIA
